NEW ORDER
When Joy Division’s Ian Curtis committed suicide in May 1980 the three remaining members, Bernard Sumner (b. Bernard Dicken, 4 January 1956, Salford, Manchester, England; guitar, vocals), Peter Hook (b. 13 February 1956, Manchester, England; bass) and Stephen Morris (b. 28 October 1957, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England; drums) continued under the name New Order.

Sumner took over vocal duties and the trio embarked on a low-key tour of the USA, intent on continuing as an entity independent of the massive reputation Joy Division had achieved shortly before their demise.

Later that same year they recruited Morris’s girlfriend, Gillian Gilbert (b. 27 January 1961, Manchester, England; keyboards, guitar) and wrote and rehearsed their debut, Movement , which was released the following year. Their first single, ’Ceremony’, penned by Joy Division, was a UK Top 40 hit in the spring of 1981, and extended the legacy of their previous band. Hook’s deep, resonant bass line and Morris’s crisp, incessant drumming were both Joy Division trademarks. The vocals, however, were weak, Sumner clearly at this stage feeling uncomfortable as frontman.

Much was made, in 1983, of the band ’rising from the ashes’ of Joy Division in the music press, when Power, Corruption And Lies was released. Their experimentation with electronic gadgetry was fully realized and the album contained many surprises and memorable songs. The catchy bass riff and quirky lyrics of ’Age Of Consent’ made it an instant classic, while the sign-off line on the otherwise elegiac ’Your Silent Face’, ’You’ve caught me at a bad time/So why don’t you piss off’, showed that Sumner no longer felt under any pressure to match the poetic, introspective lyricism of Ian Curtis.

As well as redefining their sound they clearly now relished the role of ’most miserable sods in pop’. ’Blue Monday’, released at this time in 12-inch format only, went on to become the biggest-selling 12-inch single of all time in the UK. In 1983 ’disco’ was a dirty word in the independent fraternity and ’Blue Monday’, which combined an infectious dance beat with a calm, aloof vocal, was a brave step into uncharted territory. As well as influencing a legion of UK bands, it would be retrospectively regarded as a crucial link between the disco of the 70s and the dance/house music wave at the end of the 80s.

New Order had now clearly established themselves, and throughout the 80s and into the 90s they remained the top independent band in the UK, staying loyal to Manchester’s Factory Records. Their subsequent collaboration with ’hot’ New York hip-hop producer Arthur Baker spawned the anti-climactic ’Confusion’ (1983) and ’Thieves Like Us’ (1984). Both singles continued their preference for the 12-inch format, stretching in excess of six minutes, and stressing their lack of concern for the exposure gained by recording with mainstream radio in mind.

Low Life appeared in 1985 and is perhaps their most consistently appealing album to date. While the 12-inch version of Low Life ’s ’Perfect Kiss’ was a magnificent single, showing the band at their most inspired and innovative, the collaboration with producer John Robie on the single version of ’Subculture’ indicated that their tendency to experiment and ’play around’ could also spell disaster.

Their next album, 1986’s Brotherhood, although containing strong tracks such as ’Bizarre Love Triangle’, offered nothing unexpected. It was not until the UK Top 5 single ’True Faith’ in 1987, produced and co-written by Stephen Hague hot on the heels of his success with the Pet Shop Boys , and accompanied by an award-winning Phillipe Decouffle video, that New Order found themselves satisfying long-term fans and general public alike.

The following year Quincy Jones’s remix of ’Blue Monday’ provided the group with another Top 5 hit. If the recycling of old songs and proposed ’personal’ projects fuelled rumours of a split then 1989’s Technique promptly dispelled them. The album, recorded in Ibiza, contained upbeat bass- and drums-dominated tracks that characterized the best of their early output. Its most striking feature, however, was their flirtation with the popular Balearic style, as in the hit single ’Fine Time’, which contained lines such as ’I’ve met a lot of cool chicks, But I’ve never met a girl with all her own teeth’, delivered in a voice that parodied Barry White ’s notoriously sexist, gravelly vocals of the 70s.

Meanwhile, the band had changed significantly as a live act. Their reputation for inconsistency and apathy, as well as their staunch refusal to play encores, was by now replaced with confident, crowd-pleasing hour-long sets. In the summer of 1990 they reached the UK number 1 position with ’World In Motion’, accompanied by the England World Cup Squad, with a song that earned the questionable accolade of best football record of all time, and caused a band member to observe, ’this is probably the last straw for Joy Division fans’.

Rather than exploiting their recent successes with endless tours, the group unexpectedly branched out into various spin-off ventures. Hook formed the hard-rocking Revenge, Sumner joined former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr in Electronic and Morris/Gilbert recorded an album under the self-effacing title the Other Two.

The extra-curricular work prompted persistent rumours that New Order had
irrevocably split, but no official announcement or press admission was forthcoming. In the summer of 1991 the group announced that they had reconvened for a new album which was eventually released in 1993. Republic consequently met with mixed reviews reflecting critical confusion about their status and direction. While retaining the mix of rock and dance music successfully honed on Technique, the tone was decidedly more downbeat, even sombre. Sadly, it arrived too late to help the doomed Factory label, and afterwards the band’s membership would return to varied solo projects. Hook formed Monaco in 1996.

New Order came back together in 1998 for a series of concert that ended with the 2 Temptation concerts for the new year 1999. At that moment, New Order decided to rehease Joy Division tracks and make them their own, claiming it as a lost legacy. A project called Recycle was in the air but never came true. Rob Gretton, their manager passed away in 2000 while the band was preparing their recording come back. Management duties has been then given to Andy Robinson, former tour manager, and Rebecca Boulton. Together they are Prime Management, located in Manchester.

New Order released a first track for Dan Boyle’s movie The Beach, called Brutal, which was recorded at the same moment as Crystal and 60 Miles An Hour. Later in 2001, Get Ready was released and New Order scored their first Top 10 hit in many years. Get Ready saw only 2 singles coming out of it, Crystal and 60 Miles An Hour, the band decided then to finish their collaboration with the Chemical Brothers, called Here To Stay, which they decided to release as a single, and give it to the movie about the Factory history and Anthony Wilson, 24 Hour Party People.

New Order got back to studio in 2004 to record Waiting For The Sirens’ Call, and they have wrote so many songs that they decided to keep the 7 left-overs to release another album in 2006.

HOOVERPHONIC

Hooverphonic is a Belgian rock/pop group formed in 1996. Though early on categorized as a trip hop group, they quickly expanded their sound to the point where they could no longer be pigeonholed into one genre. The band originally called themselves Hoover, but later changed their name to Hooverphonic after discovering other groups were already using the Hoover name.

The original members of the group were vocalist Liesje Sadonius, keyboardist Frank Duchêne, bass guitarist and programmer Alex Callier, and guitarist Raymond Geerts. The band achieved international recognition through the inclusion of the track "2Wicky" (from A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular) on the soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1996 film Stealing Beauty. Sadonius left Hooverphonic on amicable terms shortly after the release of A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular and was replaced by Geike Arnaert in early 1998.

After an extensive European tour with artists such as Massive Attack, Morcheeba and Apollo 440, and a tour opening for Fiona Apple in the United States in 1997, the band released Blue Wonder Power Milk in 1998 with 18-year-old Arnaert on vocals. A marked departure from their debut, the album is driven less by breakbeats and samples and more by organic string elements and traditional song structures. The single "Club Montepulciano" was a hit in native Belgium and minor college hit in the U.S.; "Renaissance Affair" was featured in the North American commercial campaign for the new Volkswagen Vapor Beetle. "This Strange Effect" was featured in an American cell phone commercial for the Motorola SLVR.

The band followed up Blue Wonder Power Milk with 2000’s The Magnificent Tree, which expands on the sound of Milk with a warmer, more approachable sound. Highlights from the album are the string-laden "Out Of Sight", "Mad About You" (a big hit in Europe), and the title track, which borrows heavily from Crosby Stills and Nash’s "Guinnevere". The same year, Hooverphonic was asked to write a song specifically for the opening ceremony of the 2000 European Football Championship, which took place in Brussels, Belgium. The result - a 12-minute long track called "Visions" - became the theme song of the championship, and Hooverphonic’s performance at the opening ceremony was heard/seen by more than than 1 billion people. On the heels of Tree’s success, the band became the first Belgian outfit to headline one of the largest and most successful European musical festivals, Rock Werchter, in 2001.

2002 saw the group shifting gears again, this time releasing the concept album Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane. The album tells the story of the fictional title character, a celebrity and singer catapulted into stardom at the expense of her relationship with her twin sister. Driven to the brink of insanity by the pressures of fame, Jackie quits show business and returns home to attempt reconciliation, where her sister poisons them both with a last supper. Jackie Cane retains the dreamy elements of Hooverphonic’s previous works, most notably on songs "Nirvana Blue" and "Human Interest", but tracks like "The World Is Mine" (the first single) and "Day After Day" have a clear Broadway influence and quality to them. The album went platinum in Belgium and won the group ZAMU’s Best Pop/Rock Band and Best Album awards in 2002.

In 2003, the band released a live album entitled Sit Down and Listen to Hooverphonic, featuring a selection of songs from the band’s body of work, as well as the new songs "Antarctica" and "The Last Thing I Need Is You", and a cover of Lee Hazlewood’s "My Autumn’s Done Come". The band launched into an extended European tour in September of 2003, performing in over 100 concert halls.

The band’s fifth studio album, a double CD entitled No More Sweet Music/More Sweet Music, was slated for worldwide release in January 2006.

RADIO 4

Radio 4 are a band from Brooklyn who formed in 1999. They claim that their sound, which has been described as "danceable punk," is "made in New York, is about New York, and sounds like New York".

The band is a five-piece, comprising Anthony Roman (Vocals/Bass) (formerly of Garden Variety), Tommy Williams (Vocals/Guitar), Gerard Garone (Keyboards), Greg Collins (Drums), and P.J. O’Connor (Percussion).

They cite a variety of influences, including Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, Primal Scream and Zero Zero, though their lively punk-pop sound combined with their militant political stance inevitably draws a strong comparison with The Clash.

Their name comes from a Public Image Ltd. song from that group’s second album.

JAMES LAVELLE

James Lavelle is a DJ, electronic recording artist and record label boss. He is best known for producing work in the trip hop, breakbeat and house music genres.

Born in 1974 in Oxford, England, Lavelle’s music career started at 15 when he ran block parties in Oxford. At only 19 he started the Mo’ Wax label, taking the name from his club night at the time, Mo’ Wax Please. Around the same time he started the That’s How It Is night with Gilles Peterson, which went on to become one of London’s longest running nights.

In 1996 Mo’ Wax released one of dance music’s most celebrated albums, DJ Shadow’s seminal Endtroducing...... Soon after this Lavelle started work on his own album under the name UNKLE. The resulting release Psyence Fiction featured collaborations with Ian Brown, Richard Ashcroft, Mike D, Badly Drawn Boy and Thom Yorke.

He is a long time resident at Fabric in London, mixing the inaugural Fabric Live mix album. He has also mixed two progressive house albums for Global Underground.

He has produced a number of film soundtracks, including Sexy Beast. Also an in demand remixer, he has reworked tracks by Garbage, The Verve, Beck and Massive Attack.

Miss Kittin

Miss Kittin (real name Caroline Hervé) is an electronica vocalist and DJ. She was born in Grenoble, France in 1973. At age 22 she began DJing, spinning records in France, Moscow and Chicago with Mike Dearborn. Soon after she met DJ Hell in Marseille who wanted her to record for his International DeeJay Gigolos label. She presented him with the EP Champagne that she recorded with The Hacker. Miss Kittin & The Hacker released First Album in 2001. Several tracks, such as "1982" and "Frank Sinatra", became anthems of the electroclash scene.

VITALIC

Vitalic is the main project of Pascal Arbez (born 1976), and not in 1973, as his false biography told that he was ukrainian ans left from Ukraine to Deutschland, when the Berlin wall felt, with traditionnal instrument in a hand, and his dog called "Mini Robot".

His first singles were released in 1996 and 1997 but were confined to the underground electronic music scene. However, he became good friends with Michel Amato, aka The Hacker that he met in the Rex, the techno temple of Laurent Garnier.

The Hacker suggested he send his new tracks to DJ Hell, head of Gigolo records in Munich. Pascal did so, and International DeeJay Gigolo Records, released the cult "Poney EP" in 2001, which was a huge success shortly after its release. With the track : La Rock, Vitalic has created a club anthem, then remixed by Sven Vath, that moved all clubbers the summer 2001 and after and who was edited in many compilations, even rock compilations, even the Two Many Djs one’s.

In 2005, Vitalic’s debut album, "OK Cowboy" was released on Different/Pias. Pascal states that all of the instruments used in the album are fake and are produced from a synthesizer (his official website stating that "the only thing he can’t fake is the emotion that galvanizes his music").

Kittin expressed an interest in the visual arts - she studied both contemporary and graphic arts. As time progressed, however, Kittin found herself emulating her parents’ musical tastes by developing an interest in musical genres ranging from classic, jazz, funk & disco to English Pop. Finding her niche in Electronic Music in 1991, Kittin raved all around the country before doing her first mix in April of 1993. Her first set came one year later in 1994, at which time she started her career with Tekmics Booking Agency, playing in the famous Dragon Ball wild parties of Southern France.

In pursuit of other opportunities, Kittin left France in 1996 and relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, where she would join the Mental Groove Record Posse one year later. Through years of an exciting and mobile career as a DJ, Miss Kittin is confident with her own personal sound. She states, "I get quickly bored when I listen to the same sound. DJs have to take risks, without only thinking about what people want to hear. Some people say I’m too technical. That’s true, but this technique also gives me the freedom to concentrate only on music."

She has become one of the most important figures in electroclash, working with Felix da Housecat, Chicks on Speed, and Golden Boy. In 2002, she released a techno music compilation under her own name (Miss Kittin On The Road). Her debut solo CD I Com has elements from different electronic styles and is more experimental than her previous records.

She collaborated with sven vath, steve bug, ellen allien (for remixes).
In 2006 : "miss kittin live at sonar", this album has been recorded at the famous electronic music festival Sonar at Barcelona. She plays her own tracks, among others tracks from aphex twin, modeselektor, boom bip,...

MARSEAUX

01. Τι είναι Marsheaux;

02. Ποιες είναι οι Marsheaux;

03. Και τι περιέχει το "Marsheaux";

04. Τι θα ακούσω;

Music
Construction
Human Reflection
Global Communication
Obsession
Civilisation
Fashion
Protection
Passion
Global Conversation
Computer Love...

05. Μάλιστα. Και τι άλλο θα ακούσω;

07. Αυτό είναι όλο;

08. Πού κολλάνε τώρα αυτές;

Συγκεκριμένα στα παρασκήνια του Ark στο electro pop festival το καλοκαίρι του 2003 με line up τις Client, τους Ladytron και το dj set του Andy Fletcher.

09. Και πού μπορούν να τις βρουν οι paparazzi;

Incognito.

10. Και από πού βγαίνει ο δίσκος τους;

Από την Undo/Klik Records.

He has recorded for the DMC, Skint, Yoshitoshi and Shine labels. In 2002 he was awarded the Best Dance Act award at the BBC Hot Press awards.

In 2005 he formed a band called Allow Mental, a collaboration with Irish singer-songwriter Martin Corrigan. They have released three 12"s so far, and played a live set on Annie MacManus’ Radio 1 birthday show. MacManus and Kieran became friends while working together at Shine in Belfast.
