In 1996, Archive brought you the blissed-out classic, Londinium. In 1999, they delivered Take My Head, a collection of symphonic torch songs for the New Millennium. In 2002 the band were again treading pastures new. The result was You All Look The Same To Me, a self-produced hard-hitting, heart-raw opus. In 2003 they recorded a soundtrack and score for Luc Bessons Michel Vaillant film, and the anthemic sound of the 4th album Noise quickly followed.
Long-term Archivists Darius & Danny tweak and refine their soundscapes with taste and flair, scuffing-up a drum-loop here, adding dream-dust there. Baroque-sounding keyboards blend timbres and textures as judiciously as Talk Talks Spirit Of Eden, Portisheads Dummy, or My Bloody Valentines Loveless.
Signed to Warner Music France, throughout Europe, Archive are going from strength to strength and are enjoying huge exposure through touring. Their live shows are a spectacle to behold; the energy the band exude is awe inspiring and there is no doubt that this band should be seen live.
Archive bring a sound so unique; their raw and intense moments so emotional and beautiful, the beautiful ones so desperate and painful. Archive beat down the sound barriers that so many bands and artistes are hindered by. The wall of sound that they are creating is becoming so big it’s difficult to see where it will end.
FAQ’S
Q. Were the songs "Fuck u" and "Finding it so hard" written about a specific person ?
A) I wrote FUCK U after seeing George Bush’s face on the TV in the morning which insprired the first line "There’s a look on your face I would like to knock out".......which there is! It all just came out from there, an angry rant. I like the fact that people can take it and sing about anyone they want who happens to be fucking them off. In Athens a radio DJ told me that he was getting requests every day from people who wanted it played for ex-partners and Boss’s etc, which I love. I wish Mr Bush could hear it one day.
Q. Which concerts do you visited recently?
A) Danny again - I was at a Deus concert recently at Shepherds Bush Empire in London, it was amazing. I don’t know if you know their music, they are from Belgium and were signed to Island at the same time as us when we did Londinium. I got to meet them in Paris when we were doing a TV show together. They were very nice people and we have a mutual respect for each other’s music, so it was good to hang out with them. Although I had a bastard of a hangover the next day!
Q) What CD’s you listen to lately?
A) Haven’t bought anything new for a while and find I don’t listen to much at home when we are doing our music. I just listen to us all the time! I’ve had a few friends do me compilation CDS which have been great to keep me a bit up to date. But I can’t remember any of the bands names.
Q. For those who had the chance to see you on stage, we all know that your electric show is based upon album’s patterns... Is it possible that, one day, you will take more freedom on your music, and, for instance, revisit your work with some new point of view ? Of course, I heard the acoustic gigs, and I was at Les Nuits Botaniques in Brussels, but I have the vision of a new kind of live electric show, it is very hard to exlain this idea in a foreign language... I hope you understood what I wanted to say.
A) Hello mate, it’s Danny here, thanks for the questions, here are my answers; We are planning to re-arrange the live electric set up for next year. It’s very hard with our music not to have it structured because we have stuff programmed and sequenced which s a bit limiting but we found was the only way to make the shows as dynamic as we want them. We give ourselves as much freedom as possible and it’s great playing the acoustic shows because it’s more relaxed.
Q) About rights. What is your opinion about Peer2Peer. Of course, it is very hard to find out some songs of Archive... But there are a lot of songs whiches aren’t available on sale for exemple (B-Sides released in UK, or France, unavailable for the rest of the World, even Michel Vaillant is difficult to find abroad...). Live footages shared by fans etc. Do you plan to make some exclusives songs available online ? Do you let people share freely those songs ? Well, I think that Archive is just like a puzzle, first you discover some songs, then, pieces after pieces, the more you look for informations, or records about the band, the more you are surprised...
A) Danny again - It’s a hard one because we obviously want as many people to hear our music but we want to get paid from it. Musicians earn such a low percentage from thier own music as it is. Giving it a way for free is not doing us any favours, we struggle to keep ourselves in the studio as is is. Having said that - I think we will put some exclusive tracks online next year as it is important for our fans.
Q) Good sequence for the next question... Can you tell us more about your next record ? Who will sing on it ? Will there be some featuring with other bands ? (Santa Claus, The Unisex, Birdpen, Mr Lab! ? (I’m dreamin’....)). Thank you for your attention, I wish you the best for the future. Just keep going to make such good music. Thank you.
A) We have been working with a new singer who has already recorded 5 tracks with us and we are very happy to be working with him. We also plan to have Dave from Birdpen in the studio in a couple of weeks to record some stuff. Then hopefully have Maria come in and do some songs as well. It’s going great in the studio so far, so we’re very happy.
Q) Are you going to become a guitar band or will you use other stuff ?
A) We will definitely not be becoming a guitar band. I find them bland. We will always experiemnt with sounds and new equipment. There are too many guitar bands in this world.
Q) What are your political views ?
A) I struggle to find anything positive about politicians , hence why I wrote ’Fuck U’. Over here you have a main choice of 3 parties that all seem to be the same and talk the same shit.
Q) I remember, a year from now, that Archive wrote here in this forum that they will come in North America to promote their new album NOISE. What’s happen with that. Noise has been release in montreal and no promotion? I ask Archive on radio (CHOM for those who knows) and nobody no what the hell I’m asking for. So, my question to the band. Are they any concret plans for a visit to Montreal, Canada???
A) It’s Danny here. You’re right. We were hoping to be in Canada this year, but the problem was as always, money, we could not afford to bring the band over because there are 16 people involved with our live set up, which is alot and we have to pay for it! We’re not a big selling band yet, so it’s hard. So for next year, we are going to create a scaled down version of our live band aswell, just so we can afford to come to Canada, America etc and hopefully things will get bigger and better financially so we can come back with the full band. It is important to us that the shows are the best they can be, so when we scale it down, we will have to use more programmed and sequenced stuff but will still make it a great live experience. Might take a while but we will get it right.
Q) Any chance that Michel Vaillant soundtrack available in North America. Bored to have that shity mp3 cd (sorry)???
A) Don’t know about the sound track, it’s not in our hands. I thought it was olut over there.
Q. Will Maria Q be a leader singer in the new album? (hope i wrote it correctly..)
A)We are planningto have Maria on the albumbut not as a main singer, we want 3 voices on this one. She hasn’t been in yet but will be in in a few weeks.
Q) Why you made remix for totally uknown band called Unisex?
A) A friend of ours manages the Unisex and we wanted to help them out and we liked that track.
Q) What are the side projects that you are working on?
A) At the moment we’re just concentrating on the next Archive album , although this week we are doing a remix for Birdpen.
Q) Any chances for remix/cover art contest in future?
A) We would love to run a remix competition in the future. We are going to re-arrange the website next year so we will make these sorts of things apart of it.
Q) Do you like using computers and modern software for making music?
A) Yes, we do use a lot of mordern software. We work with Logic and always buy new stuff but we like the balance of old and new, electronic and live
Q) What do you think about nowadays music?
A) I have go to go and DJ now but will get Darius to answer! |
