VERVE FORECAST TO RELEASE

LEONARD COHEN: I’M YOUR MAN MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

CD documents live performances by Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright,

Teddy Thompson, and more

On Tuesday, July 25, 2006, Verve Forecast will release the Motion Picture Soundtrack to the film Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man, directed by Lian Lunson, and distributed by Lionsgate Films, which director Wim Wenders has called “one of the greatest music films of all times.” The soundtrack CD features powerful performances of Leonard Cohen masterpieces by an outstanding array of today’s top singer/songwriters including Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Beth Orton, Teddy Thompson, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Jarvis Cocker, Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons),and more. The performances on the CD were recorded live at the landmark “Came So Far for Beauty: An Evening of Leonard Cohen Songs” concerts at the Brighton Dome and the Sydney Opera House, produced by music industry veteran, Hal Willner, who also produced the soundtrack CD. (The only exception: a stunning recording of “Tower of Song” featuring Leonard Cohen himself and U2.)

Since bursting onto the scene in 1967, Leonard Cohen has inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the 1960s. Lunson’s Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man is an intimate look at the songs, poetry, and life of one of music’s most celebrated and influential troubadours. The film documents the historic Sydney concert and also includes a series of candid interviews through which Cohen reveals his trademark wry humor and soulful intensity. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly wrote that the film “has moments so gorgeous they brought me to tears.”

The Motion Picture Soundtrack from Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man begins with Martha Wainwright’s ringing rendition of “Tower of Song,” one of Cohen’s most famous works. She also contributes a stirring interpretation of “The Traitor” and appears on the magical “Winter Lady,” sung here by Kate and Anna McGarrigle, her mother and aunt. Her brother, Rufus Wainwright, was also a key part of these concerts. His performances are showcased here by his moving version of “Chelsea Hotel No. 2” and by the Latin-kissed “Everybody Knows,” one of the album’s most seductive tracks.

Verve Forecast recording artist Teddy Thompson is represented on the soundtrack by two diverse tracks: the tender “Tonight Will Be Fine” as well as his take on the bitingly sardonic “The Future.” The gravelly baritone of Cohen’s heir apparent, Nick Cave, is heard in a visceral, Brechtian performance of the title track and again on one of Cohen’s most beloved compositions, “Suzanne.” On that song, Cave is joined by Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla, singers who have performed and collaborated with Cohen throughout the years. In addition to singing backing vocals throughout the album, the two are featured together in exquisite harmony on the elegiac “Anthem,” while Batalla is also showcased on the beautiful “Bird on a Wire.”

Some of the indie music world’s biggest stars were featured at these concerts and in turn on this soundtrack recording. Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker gives a dramatic reading of “I Can’t Forget” while Beth Orton’s unique voice lends an indescribable texture to her passionate “Sisters Of Mercy.” The Handsome Family paint a dark gloss on the hauntingly melodic “Famous Blue Raincoat.” One of the most mesmerizing moments of the album is Antony’s moving telling of Cohen’s “If It Be Your Will.” When documented in the movie, Time OutNY said this “ may be the most transcendent five minutes of film you’ll see this year.”

The soundtrack album concludes with the special recording of “ Tower of Song ” by Cohen and U2, which was recorded and filmed at the Slipper Room in New York City . It is the first and only time Cohen’s trademark throaty baritone is heard on the CD, and makes for an appropriate end to the record.
